Interesting interview in the most recent Christianity Today magazine with Gary Haugen of International Justice Mission. I remember hearing and meeting him when in college and IJM was in its infancy. They do amazing work.
His latest book and premise is that violence undoes progress in poverty alleviation and often goes unnoticed (or ignored because we don’t know what to do about it).
Here’s the published interview: “Why We’re Losing the War on Poverty”
Haugen also offers some encouragement that the church has role globally to fight not only poverty, but violence.
I’m thankful to live in a country that is peaceful and “safe”. Of course, the reality is that the safety is sometimes for the few and that the violence is hidden. This will definitely be an addition for my student discussions in our community development classes.
